Wolfgang Mitterer: Grand jeu 2 for organ and electronics (2018)

Wolfgang Mitterer, Renaissanc organ and electronics

If anyone can improvise on the valuable old organ in the Court Church in Innsbruck, it’s Wolfgang Mitterer. Hardly any other Austrian counterpart can switch with such virtuosity between a multitude of different musical styles like the East Tyrolean composer and musician: whether Baroque counterpoint or contemporary compositions, whether driving rockjazz or grating electronic sounds – Mitterer is well versed in very different styles, but his main interest is in unusual sounds. And that makes his concert on this Renaissance organ built by Jörg Ebert in 1561 so fascinating. Especially since Mitterer will not only use the distinct sounds of the old organ but also incorporate an electronic sound track. In his piece Grand jeu 2, which alternates between composed and improvised elements and was written in 2018 for the renovated Callinet organ in the Sainte-Marie church in Mulhouse, Mitterer skillfully juxtaposes organ tones and contemporary sounds.
