Like every year, the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) culminates in a closing concert with ensemble pieces, and although this event will have to be downsized this year due to the corona pandemic, although travel restrictions have limited participants to musicians currently living in Europe, still the program is definitely worth hearing. The evening starts with a classic modernist composition, Edgard Varèse’s Octandre, and is followed by Linie/ Splitter by Friedrich Goldmann, who has maintained close ties with Ensemble Modern for many years. Next comes a work by a contemporary composer: Karola Obermüller’s helical. There will even be a piece to commemorate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary: Hermann Kretzschmar’s chamber ensemble arrangement of Mauricio Kagel’s homage to the master from the Fluxus-infiltrated film Ludwig van.
